Support for English Language Learners
In order to help English language learners succeed in class, the effective teacher must:
-establish clarity about curriculum essentials
-accept responsibility for learner success
-develop communities of respect
-build awareness of what works for each student
-use classroom management routines that contribute to success
-use flexible classroom teaching routines
-expand a repertoire of instructional strategies
reflect on individual progress
In regards to ELL students and learning science, strategies for supporting students include: vocabulary and language development, guided interaction, authentic assessment, meaning-based context and universal themes, modeling, and the use of visual aids.
In this unit, the word wall will help all students, including ELL students master vocabulary words. The guided reading activities and ensuing classroom discussions will also help them decipher the texts and help them understand what they are reading. The assessments in this unit are authentic assessments. Students are allowed to use their journal entries, which are formative assessments, for the essay portion of the summative assessment. During the collaborative lab activities that will be used as formative assessments, students will be allowed to choose their own groups at times. ELL students who speak the same language may choose to work together if they want. That way, ELL students who have a firmer grasp of english can help the other students in either language.
Lastly, modeling and visual aids are used throughout the unit to help ELL students learn.
