Earth's Age and Geologic Time Lesson
Learning Objectives:
Standards:
National Science Education Standards Content Standard D: The solid earth is layered with a lithosphere; hot, convecting mantle' and dense, metallic core.
Lesson Description:
This introductory lesson to the unit will start by introducing students to the concept of geologic time. A word wall will be set up during this first lesson to define terms such as geologic time, crust, mantle, outer core, inner core, lithosphere, asthenosphere, and mesosphere. Additional vocabulary word will be added to the word wall throughout the unit. Students will then be given an activity in which they have to work together to place events in earth's history on a timeline. Then, the class will go over the answers together by dragging and dropping the events onto a timeline on a SMARTboard. The SMARTboard will be programmed with the answers so that when students come up to the board to place certain events onto the timeline, the program will tell the student whether or not he or she was correct.
- students will be able to define geologic time
- students will be able to correctly place important events in earth's history onto a timeline
- students will be able to identify and describe the layers of the earth
